Amid uncertainty over ODI career, Rohit Sharma rises to no. 2 spot in ICC rankings

Rohit Sharma last played an ODI in March, during the Champions Trophy final, that India won against New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is and Tests, and the only format he is active in, is the ODIs. That too came way back in March, when India played the Champions Trophy final and beat New Zealand. With India to play their next 50-over match in October vs Australia, there have been questions asked over his ODI future as well. For all we know, they could be rumours, but then there are reports suggesting, that he might not make the 2027 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma Rises in ODI Rankings

Nonetheless, without even playing in the last five months, Rohit Sharma has risen in the ICC ODI rankings, and now is the 2nd best batter in the world, after Shubman Gill. Rohit has 756 points to his name, while Shubman has 784 points. And after that, Virat Kohli is at the fourth spot, as per the latest rankings released on Wednesday.

Pakistan’s Babar Azam Falls

But despite not playing, how did Rohit rise in the rankings? Well, that is because of some poor performances by Pakistan’s Babar Azam in the recent series vs West Indies. After scoring 47, 0 and 9, Azam lost a few points and hence fell a spot. As far as the ODI bowler’s rankings are concerned, there was no change; Kuldeep Yadav retains his second spot.

In the T20Is, despite not playing for some time, Tilak Varma did gain a spot too, to become the second-best batter, with Abhishek Sharma occupying the top spot. Travis Head dropped two positions, to be no. 4 now. Similarly, for bowlers in T20Is, Arshdeep Singh rose a rung to be the 9th best bowler in the world with 653 points. Varun Chakravarthy is at no. 4.
