India U19 cricket team captain Ayush Mhatre has reportedly been named the captain of Mumbai for the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. The Day/Night 90-over tournament is scheduled to begin from August 17 onwards, with all matches scheduled to take place in Chennai. The informal tournament is the last stop before the start of India’s domestic season, which will commence with the Duleep Trophy on August 28.
Mhatre to lead Mumbai in Buchi Babu tournament
Young Mhatre will captain the Mumbai side in the tournament. The 18-year-old, who turned heads with his performances in domestic tournaments in the previous calendar year and IPL 2025, led the India U19 side in their recent tour to England. The youngster slammed two hundreds in the two unofficial Tests against England Lions. Mumbai will commence their Buchi Babu tournament campaign by taking on Tamil Nadu Districts XI on August 18.
The report further states that Sarfaraz Khan and his brother Musheer are also set to be included in the Mumbai squad. Sarfaraz, who shed 17 kgs before the IND vs ENG series, was snubbed from the Indian team despite putting up a commendable performance in the India A tour that preceded the Tests. He is currently taking part in the Kanga League and recently played a 61-run knock for Parkophene CC.
Meanwhile, his brother Musheer – who is an all-rounder – impressed with 84 & 35* knocks & took 3/8 & 4/7 for Payyade Sports Club in their game against Kandivali Cricket Association. While Sarfaraz has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, Musheer has been included as a reserve player.
