While Shubman Gill finished IND vs ENG Test series as the leading run-scorer, KL Rahul wasn't far behind with 532 runs to his name

Former England cricket team spinner Moeen Ali lavished praise on KL Rahul for his consistency and technique in the recently concluded IND vs ENG Test series. While India cricket team captain Shubman Gill finished the series as India’s leading run-getter with 740 runs to his name, the Karnataka batter was not far behind as he finished third on the list. Ali and his teammate Adil Rashid couldn’t help but be in awe of Rahul and his class.

KL Rahul > Gill? Ali thinks so

Speaking on Beard Before Wicket podcast, Ali claimed that people did not realise how good Rahul was as an opener. He said that while Gill was the top-scorer and had amazing technique, it was the Indian opener who stood out and dubbed him as one of the best players of the world. Rahul finished the IND vs ENG Test series with 532 runs to his name from 5 matches, including hundreds at Leeds and Lord’s.

I think people don’t realise how good I mean someone like KL Rahul in particular in opening the batting. He was brilliant last series as well in England and he is brilliant again this series. I actually think Shubman scored the most runs and was outstanding and like brilliant technique but I thought KL’s role within the side was probably the best I have seen him play over the years. He is such a good player and I genuinely believe that he’s one of the best players in the world, and I have said that for a while,” Moeen Ali said.

Rahul returned as the opener for India following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Adil Rashid pointed out that Rahul often goes under the radar while going on to praise his “art of batting”, technique and tempo. He said that the batter looked classy, both in defence and in attack.

He goes under the radar. Like this series, how he has batted, his tempo, his technique you know the art like you say how you speak of the art of batting in Test cricket. Going forward, going back, so there is a lot of that in it like it was really tight in defence but then half volleys he drove. That was his game in order,” Rashid said.
