Shreyas Iyer to return to Tests, 'class & experience' needed for series vs West Indies, South Africa

Shreyas Iyer is reportedly being considered for the Test series at home against West Indies and South Africa as a middle-order spin specialist

Shreyas Iyer is all set to make his return to the Indian Test side for the series against West Indies and South Africa at home. The middle-order batter last featured in a Test in 2024 in the series against England following which he fell out of favour and was even axed from the BCCI central contracts for 2024/25. Now, the Mumbai batter is all set to make his return in whites in the upcoming two-match series at home against WI and SA, particularly because of his expertise in playing spin.

Shreyas Iyer to return to Tests after over a year

As per Times of India, a source claimed that the Team India selectors were very well aware that Iyer was an excellent player of spin, something that would be crucial for the hosts in the series against West Indies and South Africa. The report states that Shreyas’ “class and experience” in the middle-order was of utmost need for the team across all formats of the game.

We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests — two each against West Indies and South Africa,” a source said.

So far, Shreyas has managed to amass 811 runs from 14 Tests and averages 36.86. This includes 5 fifties and 1 century. After being axed from the Test team in 2024, the middle-order batter went on to score 480 runs from 5 Ranji Trophy matches in the previous season, averaging 68.57, and scored two centuries as well.

The report also states that Iyer is set to earn a recall to the T20I team and is expected to be named in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. Shreyas last featured in a T20I for India back in December 2023 against Australia.
