Gill also became the 26th player to score over 6000 runs for India in international cricket.

Shubman Gill’s record-breaking series has come to an end. In his debut tour as India’s Test captain, the 25-year-old scored 754 runs. This included 4 hundreds and a double century.

Prior to the 5-match India vs England Test series, Gill was averaging 35.05 after 32 matches. As his tour with the bat in hand comes to an end, Gill averages 41.35. It’s been one of the greatest batting displays by anyone, and we aren’t even talking about this being his maiden series as captain.

Records Gill broke during India vs England Test series

  • Gill came very close to breaking the record for most runs scored in a Test match. The record still stands with Graham Gooch, but Gill came mighty close after he scored 430 runs at Edgbaston.
  • Don Bradman is the only captain who has scored over 800 runs in a Test series. At number two, with 754 runs, is Gill.
  • Gill joined an illustrious list of batters with 4 hundreds in a Test series. Only Clyde Walcott has more (5).
  • Gill became the first ever captain to score 4 hundreds away from home. Only Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar had scored 4, but both had done that at their home.

Gavaskar’s record eludes Gill

Gill has been on another level, no doubt about it. But what Gavaskar did in 1971 stands the test of time. Gavaskar not only scored 20 runs more than Gill but also did so in his first-ever Test series. That too, against the best team of the time, the West Indies. Also, he took 8 innings to get there.

Gavaskar’s second-lowest score of the series was an unbeaten 64. This isn’t to diminish what Gill has done, but to praise what one of the greatest openers the game has seen did. The world will bow to Gill for what he has done; he’s played the captain’s knock a fair few times and must get praise for leading the team with the bat.
