Australia have named their ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, with Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood returning to both formats after being rested for the West Indies tour. The series, starting August 10, will commence the start of Australia’s home summer and will be played across Darwin, Cairns and Mackay.
Mitchell Owen earns maiden ODI call-up
One of the key talking points is the selection of Mitchell Owen, who receives his first ODI call-up after an impressive T20I debut series against the West Indies, where he scored 125 runs at a strike rate of 192.30. The explosive all-rounder has been fast-tracked into the 50-over side, filling the middle-order void left by the recent retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell. He was the one who replaced Maxwell in the Punjab Kings (PBKS) setup at IPL 2025 as well.
Lance Morris also returns to the ODI squad, adding raw pace to the attack. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne, recently dropped from the Test side, retains his ODI spot. Australia continue to manage the workloads of senior quicks Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, both of whom remain rested. In Cummins’ absence, Mitchell Marsh will captain the ODI side, having already led the T20I team to a 5-0 sweep over the West Indies.
Selectors have also trimmed the T20 squad to 14, with Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett missing out despite featuring in the Caribbean series. However, Bartlett returns for the ODIs alongside Alex Carey and Xavier Bartlett.
