The IND vs ENG 4th Test was not without drama. India escaped through with a draw after tons from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. On field the final half-hour saw tempers flare with England rebuffed in their efforts to call a draw. Off the field, a fan was asked to cover his ‘Pakistan’ shirt at Old Trafford.
Pakistan fan asked to cover jersey, Lancashire to investigate
A video on social media went viral after a Pakistan fan was asked to cover his jersey at Old Trafford. The fan, named Farooq Nazar, sported a replica of the Pakistan limited overs jersey but was initially asked by security to cover it.
The security in the video was heard saying, “I have been asked by control if you can cover that shirt up please.” A steward at the game can be heard saying the jersey could be viewed as nationalistic. ESPNCricinfo reported that Lancashire have launched an investigation into the same.
Nazar was reportedly asked by the police to speak in private. It is reported that he left Old Trafford agitated than cover up his jersey. It however is unclear on which of the 5 days did the incident occur. Lancashire confirmed they were looking into the same.
“We are aware of the incident referenced and are taking steps to understand the facts and context surrounding the matter fully,” a Lancashire spokesperson said as per ESPN Cricinfo.
The India vs Pakistan rivalry is no secret and tensions between the two nations have come to a head in recent times. There were escalations at the border in May. That resulted in an IPL suspension for 10 days. BCCI refused to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup, but eventually found common ground.
