"Is he throwing?": Jasprit Bumrah's childhood coach on if pacer's action is legal

Jasprit Bumrah's childhood coach has revealed that he faced a lot of questions over the legality of the pacer's action during his early days

India cricket team pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s childhood coach has clarified that the pacer’s bowling action did not amount to chucking. After the fast bowler broke into the main scene in 2013, there were a lot of questions directed at the pacer, wondering if he was actually chucking or if his bowling action was legal. Bumrah’s childhood coach has now spilt beans on the questions that he had to face when the pacer was a newbie and how he countered them.

In an interview to The Telegraph, Bumrah’s childhood coach Kishore Trivedi revealed that he was subjected to odd questions from his disciples when the pacer took part in his initial net sessions. He revealed that the other players thought that Bumrah was throwing the ball.

Is he throwing or is this a correct action? When Jasprit first came to the nets, he had this odd action. The boys were confused. They were asking me, is he throwing it or is this a correct action? They thought he was throwing it. It’s an odd action, so the boys were confused,” he said.

Bumrah’s coach further said that the pacer should never change his action. He told the publication that he had advised the then young bowler to change his line & length but not his action since it was natural.

“I observed his action closely for three days. It was absolutely fine, there was nothing ‘chuck’ about it. You should not change your action. That is your weapon. Don’t change anything about it. You can change your line and length, where you aim the ball. But this is your original action, it’s natural. And you never change natural,” he added.

Cut to 2025, Bumrah is India’s premium bowlers across formats, having picked up 217, 149 and 89 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively.
