Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that Test captain Shubman Gill was somewhere between a fiery Virat Kohli and a calm & composed MS Dhoni. His assessment comes after the new captain has lost two Tests but also led the team to a historic win at Edgbaston. Ahead of the IND vs ENG 4th Test in Manchester, Manjrekar compared Gill to Kohli and pointed out how the two were different as captains and players.
Gill not as fiery as Virat Kohli?
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar opined that while Virat always had the fiery side even before he became a captain, it was never seen in Gill previously. The former Indian cricketer said that the Indian captain must use the 8-day break to find out his own way to enhance his leadership qualities and make himself a better batter.
“I think this break of eight days is perfect for him. There are a lot of good people around him. His father, in fact, would know him, would know his child, whether he’s a Virat Kohli, potential Virat Kohli or [MS] Dhoni or somewhere in between. I’m guessing somewhere in between. So he’s got to find his own way. But whatever way that is, it’s got to be a way that will enhance his leadership qualities and make him a better batter,” Manjrekar opined.
Manjrekar added that if Gill had a fiery side in him, it would have been seen earlier. He wondered if the Indian captain’s aggressive display on field was because if he had become the new skipper or since he had scored runs and had even led the team to his first win at the helm of affairs.
“And just to extend on that point, if Shubman Gill had that kind of a fiery side to him, we would have seen it a little earlier. You don’t have to show it when you’re captain. Or did he show it because he’s got this confidence now that he’s won a Test match and he’s got so many runs?,” Manjrekar added.
