Sai Sudharsan emerges Gujarat Titans' new hero despite Eliminator loss

Sai Sudharsan had an excellent season where in 15 matches he finished with 759 runs at an average of 54.

So near, yet so far. That has to be GT and Sai Sudharsan’s story in IPL 2025. The opener did everything in his powers to try and take his side to Qualifier 2, but that was not to be, as Gujarat fell short by 20 runs. The southpaw played an innings to remember once again, chasing a mammoth 229, when the side did not have one of their batting mainstays — Jos Buttler.

Sai Sudharsan The New Hero for GT

In 49 deliveries he scored a brilliant 80, that had 10 fours and a six, and an 84-run partnership with Washington Sundar, that nearly took the match away from Mumbai Indians. In the process, Sai Sudharsan also became the youngest-ever to score 700 runs in the IPL — surpassing his GT captain Shubman Gill.

While Gill went on to score 890 runs in 2023, the 23-year-old has 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54; and is also the orange cap holder for the 2025 season. He also became the batter with most fours in a single season — 88 now. Just going back to the previous stat, this is fifth highest runs scored in a single edition of an IPL.

MI Beat GT by 20 Runs

The table-topper is Virat Kohli — when in 2016 he had scored 973 runs, followed by Gill with 890, Jos Buttler with 863 and David Warner with 848. Coming back to the match, MI batted well with Rohit Sharma top-scoring 81 from 50. Thereafter, GT’s chase suffered an early blow when Gill was out for 1.

Sundar was excellent with 48 in 24 deliveries, and then Sherfane Rutherford added 24 from 15. A lot of credit for the win goes to Jasprit Bumrah, who returned with figures of 1/27 in four overs.
