For many, Mitchell Starc is a nightmare. The left-arm seamer’s yorkers are difficult to handle, but not for Jos Buttler. One of the rare batters who has bossed over Starc is Buttler, and he did that again in the GT vs DC clash of IPL 2025. He took down Starc with five consecutive boundaries, shattering the Australian fast bowler’s confidence.
Buttler remained stranded on 97 off 54 balls as Gujarat Titans beat Delhi Capitals to go top of the IPL Points Table with 10 points. This was Buttler’s third fifty in IPL 2025 in seven innings. Buttler is third on the Orange Cap leaderboard with 315 runs, behind Sai Sudharsan and Nicholas Pooran.
Buttler takes down Starc
With Shubman Gill falling early, Jos Buttler took charge with Sai Sudharsan. He put up a 60-run stand with Sudharsan. After the latter fell, Buttler unleashed. After scoring his 22nd IPL fifty off 32 balls, he went on a rampage against Mitchell Starc in the 15th over. He smashed five consecutive boundaries against Starc while struggling with cramps. His last 47 runs came off just 22 deliveries.
- Ball 1: FOUR! Starc bowled a full delivery from round the wicket. Buttler hit it through the extra cover area for a 4.
- Ball 2: FOUR! To stop the rampage, Starc tried a bowl a wide yorker, but it did not matter. Buttler reached and smashed it past the backward point for a four.
- Ball 3: FOUR! With no answer to Buttler’s brilliance, Starc switched to over the wicket. He once again tried to go for the wide yorker but he managed to edge it through the third man for a 4.
- Ball 4: FOUR! Starc went for the yorker this time, but could not nail it and Buttler drove it on the leg side through mid-off for a four.
- Ball 5: FOUR! After failing to bowl the yorker, Starc went for the short ball. But Buttler pulled it in the square leg. While Vipraj Nigam rushed in to take the catch, it fell just short and went for the fifth consecutive boundary.
While Buttler missed out on the record ton, he did not feel bad. He said winning the match was more important than his century.
“You want to win the game, I had my chances before that, two points are the most important thing. I told Rahul not to worry about my score, we have to win. Credit to him, he’s done that over the last few years, where he can find the fence from ball one,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation.
Jos Buttler vs Mitchell Starc
The two have faced off since 2015 across all three formats. But Buttler has got the better of Starc all the time.
