BCCI informs ECB, Harry Brook becomes first player to be "banned for two years from IPL" under new rule

BCCI has suspended England's Harry Brook from IPL until 2028 under new rule for last-minute pullout.

The new suspension rule has come into effect for the first time in the Indian Premier League. England’s potential white-ball captain Harry Brook has become the first-ever overseas player to be banned for two years after he pulled out of IPL 2025, citing personal reasons. BCCI has already informed the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) about the suspension.

England and Bangladeshi players have been under the scanner for pulling out of IPL at the last moment. Franchises complained to the BCCI in 2023 about the last-minute pullouts. Some franchises even considered not bidding for players from those countries unless BCCI stepped in.

“An official communication has been sent to ECB and Brook about BCCI banning him for two years as per its policy which was informed to each player before they registered their name for IPL auction last year. It’s a policy set by the board and each player has to oblige to it,” The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official.

What is the new IPL rule?

After the complaints from the franchises, the Indian board stepped in and formulated a new rule, beginning IPL 2025. As per the new rule, “Any player who registers in the auction and after getting picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 seasons.”

In the past, Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Harry Brook have pulled out at the last moment for personal reasons. Australia’s Adam Zampa too pulled out. Some officials in the franchise complained that the players pulled out after going for cheap at the IPL auction. They return during the mini-auction where it is easier to fetch big bucks.

No Harry Brook till IPL 2028

As a result, Brook won’t feature in IPL until 2028. He can register for the IPL 2028 mega auction. Last IPL, Brook pulled out after losing his grandmother. However, this time, the reason hardly made any sense, leaving Delhi Capitals who secured the England batter for Rs 6.25 crore in the lurch.

“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters,” Brook said in a statement on his Instagram page.

Delhi Capitals haven’t announced a replacement for Harry Brook yet with many overseas stars and Prithvi Shaw in the fray to be roped in as a replacement.
