Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly questioned the need for speculations around Rohit Sharma’s retirement ahead of Champions Trophy final. Ahead of India vs New Zealand tie, there has been a lot of rumours around the contest being the Hitman’s last ODI game. However, Ganguly begged to differ, stating that the Indian skipper was performing very well at this point of time and that there was no use of talking about his retirement.
Ganguly rubbishes talks of Rohit’s retirement
Speaking to India Today, Ganguly wondered why there was even a question on Rohit’s future in ODIs. He noted that Sharma had led the Indian team to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2024, noting that he had no idea what the selectors were thinking.
“Why is there talk of Rohit Sharma’s retirement? Why is this even a question? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I don’t know what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is playing very well,” Ganguly said.

Speaking about the Champions Trophy final, Ganguly added, “India is far better than New Zealand. India played in the 2023 World Cup finals, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and they are still unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same team will play.”
On Saturday, Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill also brushed aside reports of Rohit’s retirement.
“No discussion in the dressing room or with me (about Rohit Sharma retiring),” Gill told reporters in Dubai.
He further added that even Rohit Sharma isn’t thinking about it and hasn’t said anything to the team right now. If the veteran opener indeed wishes to hang up his boots, he’ll have a think after the ICC Champions Trophy Final.
“Even Rohit bhai would be thinking about the Champions Trophy final, like all of us. So nothing like that now,” Gill added.
