The New Zealand cricket team might lose Matt Henry to injury in the ICC Champions Trophy Final. The right-arm pacer had injured his right shoulder while fielding in the semifinal against South Africa. He had left the field but returned to bowl once again and took the BlackCaps to victory.
Mitchell Santner provides Matt Henry injury update
After the match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner revealed that Henry isn’t that hampered and was sore. However, since then, things haven’t been that great. Kiwi head coach Gary Stead revealed that Henry has had scans and that they are hopeful that he’ll be fit for the India vs. New Zealand final.
“It is still a little bit of an unknown. He is obviously pretty sore just from landing on the point of his shoulder. (We are) hopeful he will be OK. It was pretty uncomfortable. The positive thing for us is he got back out there to bowl. We’ve had some scans and stuff done on him, and we are going to give him every chance to be playing in this match,” Stead had said.
On the eve of the ICC Champions Trophy Final, Santner says that it still isn’t confirmed whether Henry will play or not. He’ll bowl at full intensity, and the only morning they will know how his body will react.
“We’ll be going across the road and training after this. Matt’s going to have a bowl just to see how he is. I guess we’ll make a call after that,” Santner told reporters in Dubai.
Who’ll replace Matt Henry, if needed?
If Henry can’t play, New Zealand will in all likelihood bring Nathan Smith to the XI. The pacer played in the ICC Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan and can bat a little as well. But they have Jacob Duffy as an option as well. If they wish to improve their batting and rely on part-time spinners like Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips, they can also go for Devon Conway or Mark Chapman.
