"He'll have to tighten up": Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at Virat Kohli for repetitive dismissals

India will take on Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday in Dubai

The India Cricket Team star batter Virat Kohli is not in the best form of his career at the moment. The star batter has been struggling to score runs and a similar incident was observed in the India vs Bangladesh match of the ICC Champions Trophy. Former India star Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his concern as to how Kohli is getting dismissed by the same kind of bowlers in the white-ball format of the game.

Back in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, it was a different sight to behold. Virat Kohli was constantly dismissed edging deliveries outside the off stump. However, in ODIs, Kohli has consistently fallen victim to left-arm spinners. Against Bangladesh, he was dismissed cheaply by Rishad Hossain after scoring just 22 runs.

Sunil Gavaskar advises Kohli

“It is to a great extent due to the fact that the bat face opens up. Same thing happens when he’s playing against the quicks in Australia. The bat face opening up, looking to play through the covers, opening the face of the bat, that gets him into trouble. So, that is something that he’s got to watch out for, even when he got out,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Kohli now has 6 consecutive dismissals in ODIs against spinners. And out of the 6 dismissals, five of those have come against left-arm spinners. In the IND vs ENG ODI series, he fell victim to Adil Rashid. Sunil Gavaskar went on to explain how his opening the face of the bat is doing him more trouble than good.

“A couple of times before he got out, he reached for Rishad, the ball turned, the bat face opened, and luckily the bat face opened and so there was no nick. So, that is something that he’ll have to tighten up on now. But yes, I guess if you’re getting out to the same kind of bowling, then there is a bit of concern there,” Gavaskar added.
