India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly is backing Jasprit Bumrah as the new Test captain. Earlier on Saturday, a report had claimed that Rohit Sharma was unlikely to be picked for Tests again. Now a fresh report has stated that Gambhir wants Bumrah as the skipper and Yashasvi Jaiswal to be groomed as his deputy.
Gambhir eyes new captains for Test and ODI?
As per MyKhel, Gambhir wants Bumrah to lead India in the five-match Test series against England later in June. Amid the BCCI’s cautious approach in naming the pacer as captain owing to his history of injuries and workload management, the coach has suggested to the selectors to groom Jaiswal as the future captain. The report states that Gambhir wants the southpaw to be Bumrah’s deputy in IND vs ENG Test series.

Further, the report states that a call on Rohit Sharma‘s future in ODIs will be taken after Champions Trophy. It suggests that Hardik Pandya is likely to be made the new ODI captain. The report adds that the all-rounder could also be entrusted with the responsibility in T20Is if Suryakumar Yadav continues to fail with the bat.
“Post Champions Trophy, a call on Rohit Sharma’s ODI future will be taken as Indian captain. Hardik will be the ODI captain first if Surya continues to flop, Hardik will be gradually given T20 captaincy as well,” a source told the publication.
It is pertinent to point out that Hardik was snubbed last year when the selectors decided to name SKY as the T20I captain. At that time, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had cited fitness issues as the reason behind picking the batter to lead the side instead of the all-rounder.
