Ousted from ICC Champions Trophy, Yashasvi Jaiswal returns to play Ranji Trophy semifinal for Mumbai

Yashasvi Jaiswal has played just a solitary match in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai, making a combined 30 runs.

In what will come as a huge boost for Mumbai, Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to return to play in the upcoming Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Vidarbha. Initially, Jaiswal was selected in India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. However, as a domino effect of Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, Jaiswal was axed from the squad as BCCI replaced him with another spin-bowling option, Varun Chakravarthy. However, now, as per reports, Jaiswal is all set to utilize his time in refining his red-ball skills and play a superb Ranji Trophy showdown on February 17.

Yashasvi Jaiswal to play Ranji Trophy semifinal

Mumbai’s chief selector, Sanjay Patil, has revealed that the team will retain the same squad that played against Haryana in the quarterfinals for their upcoming match against Vidarbha, with the only addition being Yashasvi Jaiswal. “The inclusion of Yashasvi for this crucial game will be beneficial and will boost the Mumbai team’s morale,” Sanjay Patil said (via Mid-Day). While Jaiswal is set to play the upcoming Ranji Trophy clash, it should still be reminded that he is part of India’s non-travelling reserves alongside Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube.

This would definitely be a huge boost for Mumbai, who had a difficult time beating Haryana. If not for Shardul Thakur’s impressive bowling and a match-changing partnership by the tailenders, Haryana could’ve very well toppled the current Ranji Trophy defending champions. If confirmed, Yashasvi Jaiswal will straightaway swap with Akash Anand as an opener. However, the problem is that Anand is a keeper. If snubbed, who will keep wickets for Mumbai? The answer could be Hardik Tamore, who didn’t play in the quarterfinal clash. Tamore could come in for Suryakumar Yadav, who is likely to miss out due to an injury concern.
