The shake-up in captaincy in the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) continues. UP Warriorz has officially announced that Deepti Sharma will be captaining the side for the upcoming edition of WPL. The Indian all-rounder will replace the injured Alysa Healy. The Aussie great has been ruled out of the tournament with a foot injury.
Last season, Deepti Sharma served as the vice-captain of the side, and Healy served as the leader. But now with Healy out of the tournament with a stress injury on her right foot, the stage is set for Deepti to lead the charge.
Third Indian captain in WPL 2025
Deepti Sharma now becomes the third Indian player to lead her franchise team. For Mumbai Indians, it is Harmanpreet Kaur and for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, it is Smriti Mandhana. Now, the addition of Deepti as the captain of UP Warriorz showcases that the teams have become more dependent on Indian stars, rather than foreigners.
Last season, i.e. WPL 2024, Deepti had a great season for her side. She scored 295 runs, the highest for her side and the 5th highest in the league. She also bagged 10 wickets to her name, making her the second-highest wicket-taker in the team.
In the meantime, Alyssa Healy‘s absence will be felt by her side. She has been nursing multiple injuries for quite some time. This prompted her to miss matches in the Women’s T20 World Cup, the Women’s Big Banh, and the T20I matches of the Ashes. Deepti now will be looking to gift her side, the first WPL title.
