Milestones continue to knock at Steve Smith’s door as he reached yet another landmark during AUS vs SL 2nd Test. The Australian skipper became the leading run-getter in the sub-continent, overtaking previous record holder Ricky Ponting. Smith recently went past 10,000 Test runs in the 1st Test in Galle after being left stranded on 9999 runs at the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Another milestone unlocked for Steve Smith!
Former Australian captain Ponting previously held the record for most runs in the Asian subcontinent. Punter boasted of 1889 runs from 48 innings, averaging 41.97. With just 27 runs need to surpass Ponting, Smith reached the milestone in Australia’s 1st innings of the 2nd Test. It took Smith just 15 minutes post-lunch to script history once again. On Day 1 of the contest, he surpassed Ponting to become the Australian Test cricketer with most catches (non-wicketkeeper).

“I‘ve always enjoyed playing against spin in the subcontinent. It’s a different beast than playing spin back home. You’ve got to come up with different ways to score and survive, particularly when the wickets are really extreme.,” Smith had said earlier on Day1.
Prior to this series, Smith has been involved in only one series victory in the Asian sub-continent. That victory came against Pakistan in 2022.
