"So we went after Shreyas Iyer" - PBKS coach reveals real reason behind splurging 26.75 Cr

IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer became the second-most expensive player in the history of the IPL Auction, after Rishabh Pant.

As the IPL 2025 season is coming closer, there are some massive revelations being made by different franchises, over certain players bought during the IPL Auction in November. Now PBK head coach Ricky Ponting has explained the rationale behind pushing for players like Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Shreyas Iyer Bagged for 26.75 Cr for IPL 2025

While Shreyas was bagged for INR 26.75 Cr, Arshdeep’s bid was placed at 18 Cr, and so was Chahal’s. “There were three players that I wanted to bring in. One who has been at Punjab Kings for three or four years—Arshdeep Singh. I also wanted to bring in a captain who I have worked with before and who has had a lot of success. So, we went after Shreyas Iyer. I also wanted to bring in Yuzi. So the Indian guys that we have are perfect,” Ponting said in an episode of The Howie Games podcast.

“And then, we had to make a few tweaks as the auction went on to make sure we ended up with a really good squad. I am trying to make things different and rebuild and have the right people around me. But these three were non-negotiables,” the former Aussie international added.

Everything is going to be different from the previous years.”
