The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the nominees for the Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month awards for January 2025. Among the standout performers, India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy and young batting sensation G Trisha have been shortlisted after their exceptional performances. It was quite surprising to see Trisha’s name simply because she hasn’t played international cricket. However, she was one of the best performers at the recent Women’s Under-19 World Cup.
Varun Chakravarthy: New X-factor for India
Varun Chakravarthy was simply unplayable in the T20I series against England. His variations and accuracy kept the English batters guessing, making him India’s go-to weapon in the middle overs.
The mystery spinner set the tone with a match-winning 3/23 in the opening T20I at Eden Gardens. He faced a tough outing in Chennai but bounced back spectacularly in Rajkot, tearing through England’s lineup with a stunning 5/24. By the time the series wrapped up in Pune, he had scalped 12 wickets at an average of 9.41 and an economy of 7.01—numbers that solidify his nomination for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. Alongisde Chakravarthy, Jomel Warrican and Noman Ali have also been nominated.
G Trisha leads India to U-19 World Cup glory
G Trisha was the driving force behind India’s victorious campaign at the ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia. The young opener put on a masterclass in aggressive batting, setting the tone for India’s triumph.
Her most memorable knock came against Scotland, where she smashed a scintillating 110* off just 59 balls, making her the first centurion of the tournament. Throughout the competition, she remained India’s most reliable batter, leading the run charts with 265 runs at a stellar average of 66.25 and a blazing strike rate of 149.72.
Trisha’s all-round contributions extended beyond her batting, as she also took four wickets at an economy rate of 3.75. Her performances played a pivotal role in India’s title-winning run, making her a deserving contender for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. Karishma Ramharack and veteran Beth Mooney are other candidates.
