Women’s cricket’s rop franchise tournament WPL (Women’s Premier League) is all set to commence on 14th February 2025. Mumbai Indians’ captain Harmanpreet Kaur is all set to feature in this year’s tournament as well. She will be looking forward to recreating the 2023 glory, where in the inaugural season MI lifted the trophy. Along with that Harmanpreet believes the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be crucial for India’s ODI World Cup preparations this year. She feels WPL 2025 will help players enhance their skills and improve their fitness.
Harmanpreet on WPL and ODI World Cup
Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Harmanpreet said, “I think this WPL is going to play a very big role because this year we have the ODI World Cup. After the WPL, we have a very good window where we can work on our fitness and raise our fitness level.” The WPL is scheduled from February 14 to March 15, and after that, the players have over three months to prepare before their next series in England.
WPL schedule and the road ahead
The five-team WPL will be held in four Indian cities, featuring 20 league matches and two knockout games. After the tournament, the Indian team will have a long break to focus on fitness before flying to England for a series of T20Is and ODIs. Following that, they’ll play three home ODIs against World Champions Australia in September, ahead of the World Cup in October. This schedule provides Indian players with much time to prepare, work on their game, and improve their skills during the downtime.

Insights from coach to MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur
Mumbai Indians head coach Charlotte Edwards shared her thoughts on the team’s strategy. She emphasised the need for clarity and aggressive play, especially for players like Pooja Vastrakar, who is recovering from an injury. Edwards said, “Every player that comes into MI hopefully knows what’s expected of them. But equally important is that aggressive approach, which is what we want.” She stressed the importance of playing fearless cricket and enjoying every moment on the field. “That’s what makes me and Jhulan very happy—when they’ve got smiles on their faces and they can impact games,” Edwards added.
