Following a blockbuster performance in the India vs. England T20I series, Varun Chakaravarthy has been added to India cricket team’s squad for the ODI series. The pre-series training camp began on February 2 in Nagpur, with an emphasis on preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy.
Varun Chakaravarthy joins Team India for England ODIs
The mystery spinner has shown a new version of himself since coming back to the Indian team in October last year. After getting dropped from the T20I team in November 2021, Chakaravarthy 2.0 has returned. He’s added weapons to his arsenal. That ‘mystery’ that had disappeared is back.
We saw Harry Brook failing to pick him up throughout the 5-match series and ended with 14 wickets to his name. Since returning, Chakaravarthy has played 12 matches and picked at least 2 wickets in 11 matches. He’s in top nick, and Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma are looking to make full use of it.
Varun Chakaravarthy stats since re-joining Team India
| Matches | Overs | Wickets | Economy | Average | Strike Rate | 5W | Best Figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 46 | 31 | 7.59 | 11.3 | 8.9 | 2 | 5/17 |
Chakaravarthy will be the fifth tweaker in the team, joining Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav. The pitches in Dubai usually spin, and considering Team India has to play all of their ICC Champions Trophy fixtures there, he could be a constant threat.
Chakaravarthy to make India’s Champions Trophy squad?
Granted that his memories of playing in Dubai aren’t great, he went wicketless in the 2021 T20 World Cup, but that doesn’t mean he won’t succeed there now. He could make the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy as one of the three spin-bowling all-rounders but would at least make the reserves list for the 8-team tournament.
