England’s Adil Rashid is arguably one of the best spinners in the shortest format of the game. Yet, he went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Having registered for a base price of Rs 2 cr, he found no takers as teams weren’t interested in picking up the T20 veteran. Now, an IPL franchise has explained why no team wanted to go for the England star despite his record in T20Is.
Why no IPL team wants Adil Rashid?
Speaking to Times of India, an unnamed IPL franchise pointed out that teams preferred mystery spinners over regular bowlers like Rashid. The team told the publication that franchises preferred going with the likes of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad instead. Further, the franchise pointed out that Adil has a history of leaking runs.
“Unfortunately in the IPL, teams prefer a mystery spinner like Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmed or an ace leggie like Rashid Khan. Most teams prefer spinners who can bat. When it comes to foreigners, teams prefer explosive batters and pacers. Rashid has leaked runs in the past,” an IPL franchise told TOI.

For the unversed, Rashid has played in the IPL in the past. The England spinner was a part of Punjab Kings in 2021 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023. In three IPL matches, Adil managed to take only 2 wickets while conceding 91 runs at an alarming economy of 9.10. Besides, the maximum number of games he has played in an IPL season is just 2.
However, Rashid’s T20 numbers from leagues across the world and domestic cricket tell another story. He has 360 wickets from 322 matches, averaging 22.68 in the shortest format of the game. In T20Is, he has 129 wickets so far from 122 games, averaging 24.13. ILT20, Big Bash League (BBL), SA20, Vitality Blast, The Hundred and BPL are some of the leagues that Rashid has played in previously apart from the IPL.
