RR made big mistake in retaining Dhruv Jurel & letting go Jos Buttler? IND vs ENG series gives proof

IPL 2025: Dhruv Jurel was retained for a massive 14 Cr, while Jos Buttler was bagged by GT for 15.75 Cr.

Ever since the IPL began in 2008, there have been a few questionable decisions made by all teams. There was a time when AB De Villiers used to play for DD, and the team did not retain him; and moved to RCB thereafter. There was also a case where, in the first season, all teams had to make their picks from the U-19 World Cup winning team, and DD, instead of going for Virat Kohli, went for Pradeep Sangwan. Then, KKR decided not to retain swashbuckling Chris Gayle ahead of IPL 2011. There were also questions raised over Delhi picking Yuvraj Singh for 14 Cr, despite his poor run of form.

Dhruv Jurel vs Jos Buttler

And there were many more.. But then, if one was to pick the worst decision made by a franchise in IPL 2025 Auctions, it has be by Rajasthan Royals, for retaining Dhruv Jurel for 14 Cr, and letting go Jos Buttler. Okay fine, maybe the team did not want to go with excessive keepers — but when it comes to the T20 format, the English man is head and shoulders above the Indian — or so the numbers speak.

In 431 T20s overall, Jos Buttler has scored over 12000 runs at an average of 35 with a strike rate of 145, and 8 tons. If we further break down his stats — in 131 T20Is he has scored 3502 runs at an average of 36. In IPL, he has been exceptional, where in 108 matches he has scored 3582 runs at an average of 38, and including 7 tons.

RR’s Big Blunder Before IPL 2025

In contrast, not only Dhruv Jurel is a relative newbie, but hasn’t shown anything, that makes him a viable T20 batter. In 41 T20s, he has scored 449 runs at an average of 20. He has a strike-rate of 132, and has only two fifties. In three T20Is, he has scored 10 runs only. Then in 28 IPL matches he has only 347 runs at an average of 23.

In fact, in the two matches in the ongoing IND vs ENG series, Buttler and Jurel has stayed true to their T20 numbers. The Indian in the Chennai match, scored only four runs, where the team needed him the most, and on the other hand, Buttler has returned with 45 and 68. So, this might just be RRs one of the biggest or costliest mistakes ever.
