Mohammed Shami is still waiting to make his international comeback, having last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite being named in the squad for IND vs ENG T20Is, the pacer was benched for the first two T20Is. While there were speculations of Shami not yet being 100% fit, a report has now shed light on why he hasn’t featured in the series yet.
Shami being preserved for ODIs, Champions Trophy?
As per Times of India, a BCCI source informed that Shami was not needed as much for T20Is. The report claims that the pacer was bowling in full tilt, adding that he had shed two kilos from what he weighed before his injury. The source added that he would be good to go once the IND vs ENG ODIs begin.
“Shami has shed two kilograms from what he weighed before his injury. He is bowling at full tilt. He is not needed as much in T20 matches. But he should be good to go once the ODIs come around,” a BCCI source told Times of India.

Shami has been named in the squads for both IND vs ENG T20Is and ODIs. The veteran pacer, who last played in ODI World Cup 2023 final, went under the knife earlier in 2024 after sustaining an ankle injury. After recovering at the NCA under the watch of the BCCI medical team, he made his return to competitive cricket in the domestic tournaments. While he was supposed to reportedly make his international comeback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he could not after developing a swelling in his left knee during his recovery.
Shami was seen bowling in the nets at the Eden Gardens ahead of the 1st T20I with his left knee heavily strapped. This fueled speculations of his injury status. However, it looks like the team management is keen to preserve him for the ICC Champions Trophy. He is expected to play a crucial role in the tournament, given that uncertainity looms over Bumrah’s availability.
