We are less than a month away from the start of the WPL 2025, and 2024 champions RCB have encountered a major problem now. Their star all-rounder and retention, Sophie Devine won’t play the tournament, as she has decided to take a break from domestic cricket. The news was confirmed by New Zealand Cricket, but no specific reason for the same was given.
Sophie Devine to Miss Entire WPL 2025
“Player well-being is paramount to us – it takes precedence over everything else,” said Liz Green, Head of Womens High Performance Development. “Sophie’s had excellent support from the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and from our own high performance unit staff, and everyone agrees this is the best option available. “The most important thing for NZC is that Sophie has a decent break, receives good support and care, and is fit and well before returning to professional cricket”.
The statement further added, “A decision on Devine’s playing future will be announced in due course.” Sophie Devine has been a stellar player for New Zealand, having played 152 ODIs, scoring 3990 runs, at an average of 31, and bagging 107 wickets. In the T20Is, she has been equally good, scoring 3391 runs, and picking up 117 wickets.
As far as the WPL is concerned, in 18 matches she has scored 402 runs at an average of 23, and even picked up 9 wickets. She, along with Ellyse Perry, played a pivotal role in RCB’s maiden WPL title win in 2024. Meanwhile, there hasn’t been any replacement announced by the franchise.
