Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy started as cover, not a plan. In a way, he was an accidental captain. He first led India in a T20I in November 2023, filling in for an injured Hardik Pandya, and won that series 4-1 against Australia.
The full-time job came after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format in mid-2024, and what followed turned into one of the most dominant stretches any India captain has produced in any format: eight straight bilateral series wins to start, then the 2025 T20 Asia Cup, then the defining result of his tenure, defending the T20 World Cup title on home soil in 2026, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad, India’s biggest margin in a T20 World Cup final.
It made India the first team in the tournament’s history to defend the title and the first to win it at home. Across the run, he led India to 11 consecutive series and tournament wins, a world record for a full-member nation, and finished with a win rate that stands as the best of any full-member captain in the format’s history.
None of that kept the job safe. Despite the T20 World Cup win, the selection committee moved forward to hand the T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer in June 2026 as part of a planned changeover, not because of any dip in form or results. His full T20I record reads 52 matches, 40 wins, an 82.00% win rate, built almost entirely on a period where India barely lost. Yet, he was sacked from captaincy and dropped from the squad for a poor run of form.
IPL captaincy
Suryakumar’s IPL leadership never got the same runway. He captained Mumbai Indians for five matches between 2023 and 2026, most likely as short-term cover, and won two of them, for a 40.00% win rate. It’s a footnote next to the international record, five games spread across four seasons rather than anything resembling a settled tenure.
Suryakumar’s captaincy record is unusual for how lopsided it is: a T20I run that stands among the best any captain has produced in the format, without an equivalent chapter at franchise level, and an ending that had nothing to do with form. He leaves the job, if the reports hold, as the only captain to defend a T20 World Cup and still get replaced within months of doing it.
