Kusal Mendis suffers shoulder injury during SL vs BAN 2nd Test, could miss ODI series as well

Kusal Mendis was looking to score his 11th Test hundred while playing against Bangladesh in Colombo before getting injured.

Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis suffered a right shoulder injury during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh 2nd Test in Colombo. Marching towards a well-made hundred, Mendis was run out while attempting to take a double with his team already 8 down.

He thought it would be an easy two runs. But Ebadot Hossain got to have gotten to the ball hit to cover with ease. Kusal knew he wasn’t going to get in but still put in a full-length dive. He ended well short of the crease. But the worrying thing was that he’d injured himself.

He winced in pain and called for the physio. It looked like he’d hurt his side. And slowly left the field. Sri Lanka’s innings was wrapped up four balls later. Soon, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a statement where he stated that Kusal is under observation and won’t be wicketkeeping for the rest of the Test.

“Kusal Mendis hit his right shoulder on the ground while diving, trying to avoid being run out. He is currently being assessed and is still in pain. He’s receiving treatment from the team physio and may not take the field today. If the pain persists, an MRI scan will be performed on the player. Lahiru Udara is keeping wickets in his place, with Pavan Rathnayake serving as the substitute fielder,” SLC said in a statement.

Kusal might miss the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh, which will commence on July 2 in Colombo. He was named in Sri Lanka’s 16-member squad just a few hours ago but may not be fit enough to feature in it. As mentioned by SLC, Kusal is still being treated and may even undergo MRI scans.
