The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned pacer Blessing Muzarabani for two years for ditching the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in favour of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). For those unaware, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) brought in Muzarabani as a replacement player for Mustafizur Rahman. This move came after Muzarabani agreed to play for Islamabad United for PSL 2026. Incidentally, both IPL and PSL are currently going on simultaneously.
PCB cracks down as PSL–IPL tug-of-war intensifies
The PCB’s decision, which was made public on April 14, shows how fed up they are with players treating PSL contracts like flexible options in a busy franchise calendar. Islamabad United picked up Muzarabani as a replacement after he didn’t sell in either the IPL or PSL auctions. But just when it looked like he would play for the defending champions, the IPL called, and the Zimbabwean quick didn’t think twice.
KKR had to end Mustafizur Rahman’s contract at the BCCI’s demands, which made room for a new overseas pacer. Muzarabani took advantage of the chance and left his PSL deal to join the Knight Riders. He has already played in two games this season and made an immediate impact, getting 4/41 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, he hasn’t played since.
Blessing Muzarabani stats: IPL vs PSL
| Tournament | Inns | Wkts | BBI | BBM | Ave | Econ | SR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPL | 2 | 4 | 4/41 | 4/41 | 18.75 | 10.71 | 10.5 |
| PSL | 15 | 21 | 3/18 | 3/18 | 20.28 | 7.79 | 15.6 |
However, the PCB has taken a hardline stance. In an official statement as per Cricbuzz, the league stressed that “Professionalism in franchise-based leagues requires participants to act with transparency and consistency. Entering into a conflicting engagement while a prior binding agreement subsists represents a departure from the expected standards of the game. Such conduct, if left unaddressed, erodes the reliability of dealings and the confidence that franchises, regulators, and stakeholders place in professional engagements.”
This isn’t the only time this has happened. Last season, South Africa’s Corbin Bosch was banned for a year after leaving a PSL deal to join the IPL. He joined the Mumbai Indians as a replacement for Lizaad Williams. This time, the punishment is twice as bad. This could mean that the PCB is done giving warnings. Having said that, Muzarabani might not need PSL anymore, as his incredible height advantage could help him get retained by KKR or any other IPL team might sign him at an auction.
Muzarabani isn’t the only one who has made the switch. This year, Spencer Johnson (CKS) and Dasun Shanaka (RR) also dropped out of their PSL commitments to play in the IPL. No official action has been taken yet, but similar punishments could be coming.
