Path of Exile 2 "Return of the Ancients" expansion is here. Discover the Runes of Aldur league, two new Ascendancies, a reimagined Atlas, and 15 formidable bosses.

The journey toward the full 1.0 release of Path of Exile 2 reaches its penultimate chapter with the Return of the Ancients expansion. This massive update fundamentally reimagines the endgame, shifting the Atlas from a map-based grind into a fully explorable world. At its heart lies The Fortress, a colossal, automated stronghold unearthed by the Beast’s corruption. Players must infiltrate its depths, navigate ancient machinery, and dismantle precursor superweapons to save a crumbling Wraeclast.

Path of Exile 2 – The Runes of Aldur League

In the accompanying challenge league, players assist Farrow, a blacksmith rediscovering the lost art of Ezomyte Runesmithing. By inscribing symbols onto Remnants, you can craft powerful items, though the process reanimates nearby undead. These foes gain elemental and celestial powers based on your chosen runes, creating a high-stakes risk-reward loop. Mastery of this system grants access to Verisium and Runic Ward, a new defensive resource that replaces mana for unique, class-agnostic runic abilities.

New Ascendancies and Endgame Storylines

Two new specialized classes join the roster:

  • The Spirit Walker (Huntress): A primal master who commands Azmerian spirits. She can tame legendary beast bosses, use “Idol” socketables for minion buffs, and channel the powers of the Stag, Owl, and Bear.
  • The Martial Artist (Monk): An illusionist who creates spectral echoes and bells to shatter enemies. This class utilizes runic tattoos and the “Way of the Stonefist” to transform bare hands into weapons of mass destruction.

The expansion also breathes new life into Early Access content. Delirium, Breach, Ritual, and Expedition have been integrated into fixed Atlas locations with dedicated questlines. From hunting the Raven Trickster Tangmazu to launching maritime expeditions to rescue Gwennen, these legacy mechanics now feature “pinnacle” versions and deep crafting systems like the Genesis Tree.

Enhanced Progression and Quality of Life

The Atlas passive tree has been overhauled for flexibility, allowing players to unlock all nodes and make multi-choice decisions without constant respeccing. New Atlas Masters provide swappable, build-defining bonuses. To streamline the experience, a native in-game Build Planner and instant market price-checking have been added. Completionists can strive for the Knight of Aldur armor set by conquering the new eight-challenge system.
