Earlier this year, the former WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood defended his title against Mauricio Lara in a 12-round bout. This match was held at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England, on February 18, 2023. This was one of the big fights in the featherweight divisions as two of the best fighters competed in the squared ring. Unfortunately, the match ended up in a loss for Wood after Mauricio Lara knocked him out. Although the British boxer tried to capitalize on the damage, he was unsuccessful in doing so in the further rounds resulting in his downfall.
The match started with a few punches from both sides. Wood had a notable lead in the judge’s scorecard with his body shots and punches. The match went smoothly for the first half where the British boxer was seen as comfortable with his opponent. However, a disastrous moment awaited for him as Lara went on a rampage with significant strikes. In the seventh round, fans saw a left hook knocking out the champion on the ground. Although Wood managed to stand the referee’s count, hsi coach threw a towel in the ring for the stoppage.
