Zlatan Ibrahimovic: A new film titled “I Am Zlatan” is going to premiere in cinemas based on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s life from adversities to stardom. Although Ibrahimovic is an active player for AC Milan the film portrays the story of a child with a troubled childhood growing up in the Swedish capital of Malmo to becoming a superstar footballer with multiple accolades in the sport. The 40-year-old is known for his swagger, brave attitude and aggressive nature which is very different from his compatriots who are generally humble in nature. Ibrahimovic started his career at Malmo back in 1999 and then made his way to play for some of Europe’s biggest teams like Ajax Amsterdam, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. He is still going strong as he currently plies for his Serie A outfit AC Milan.

The film is pitched a story of an underdog the movie “Jag ar Zlatan” (I am Zlatan), which premieres on Friday, is based on the autobiographical book of the same name. The director of the film Jens Sjogren told AFP how he wanted to share more about Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s early days as a young kid.

Sjogren revealed how he found himself when he read the first few chapters of the book and immediately related with Zlatan. “When I read the first chapters of the book I thought of my own childhood,” Sjogren said, adding that by focusing on the young Zlatan the movie is likely to appeal to not just those who have followed “Ibra’s” football career.

“Even though Zlatan had a rough childhood at times we have all been children and struggled with different things,” the 45-year-old director said.

Sjogren feels that it is important for the viewers to watch the film from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s perspective as a kid. He feels that telling the story from the child’s perspective is very important.

“What’s he’s experiencing, we get to experience, but when there’s things he doesn’t hear or doesn’t understand then we as spectators shouldn’t understand that either,” he said.

Therefore the film starts with Zlatan Ibrahimovic aged 12and shows how he struggled in school. The film also highlights how he leaves his mother and in with his father before moving on to his first years as a professional player at Malmo and Ajax. The film shows how Zlatan Ibrahimovic struggled a lot to be where he is today as a renowned footballer.

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a huge figure in Sweden and truly the biggest star to come out of the country. But his popularity in Malmo is questioned. Just months after his statue was held up at his former club Malmo, multiple fans vandalised it out of anger after Ibrahimovic announced that he was buying a stake in Stockholm-based club Hammarby. They are Malmo’s rivals and that is why the fans are angry with the 40-year old striker. The fans saw that act as a betrayal and spray painted the statue and knocked over several parts.
