Carlos Alcaraz set to become youngest ever World No.1
Spanish teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz has made rapid strides in 2022. The 19-year old started the year as the World No.32, with just a solitary ATP title to his kitty. The youngster drastically improved his game this year as he won his first title this year at the Rio Open. Soon he became the youngest-ever Miami Open champion as he won the ATP Masters 1000 title by defeating Casper Ruud in the final. He then went on to win the Barcelona Open title and clinched his second ATP Masters 1000 title at the Madrid Open. In this tournament he defeated both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, becoming the first-ever player on the ATP Tour to clinch victories in the same tournament against both the Tennis greats. His scintillating performances made him enter the Top 5 in the world rankings ahead of the US Open this year, with which he became the second-youngest player after Rafael Nadal to enter the Top 5 in the rankings.
However, with the early exits of defending champion and World No.1 Daniil Medvedev from the US Open this year and the subsequent exit of Rafael Nadal from the fourth round, Alcaraz now will become the World’s No.1 player if he wins the US Open final. At the moment, Lleyton Hewitt holds the record for youngest player to become World No.1 as he achieved the top spot in 2001 at the age of 20 years. Alcaraz is now just one victory away from surpassing Hewitt and becoming the first-ever teenager in the Open era to become the World No.1 in Men’s Singles.
Carlos Alcaraz to become youngest US Open champion in 21st Century
The Spaniard is also set to break another record of Lleyton Hewitt if he wins the US Open. Hewitt currently holds the record for the youngest ever player to win the US Open in the 21st century. Hewitt won the title at the Flushing Meadows in 2001 and became the second youngest player to win the year end major at the age of 20 years, 6 months and 13 days. Pete Sampras still holds the record for the youngest US Open champion as he won the title in 1990 at the age of 19 years, 0 momths and 28 days. While Alcaraz has no chance of breaking Sampras’ record he can still become the youngest US Open champion in the 21st century aged 19 years, 4 months.
Casper Ruud to become first-ever player from Norway to win a Grand Slam title
23-year old Casper Ruud has been a trialblazer of sorts as he is playing a huge role in popularising the sport in his country Norway already. The 23-year old already has several firsts as a Norwegian in his short span as a professional. In 2020, he won the Argebtina Open title, which was the first ATP Title in his career and he became the first-ever player from Norway to win an ATP Tour title. He then progressed in the rankings and became the first ever Norwegian to reach the Top 20 and subsequently Top 10 in the World rankings. Later in 2021, he became the first-ever player from Norway to qualify for the ATP Finals at Turin.
Earlier this year, he created history by becoming the first ever Norwegian to reach a Grand Slam final as he played the summit clash at the French Open and finished as runner-up after losing to Rafael Nadal. He has now reached his second Grand Slam final and by doing so joined Rafael Nadal as they are the only players to reach two Grand Slam finals in 2022. He now eyes his maiden Grand Slam title that will make him the first Grand Slam champion from Norway.
