Malaysia Masters Highlights – HS Prannoy defeated China’s Weng Hong Yang 21-19, 13-21, 21-18 to lift the Malaysia Masters Men’s Singles title on Sunday, 28th May 2023. This week, Prannoy gave ample display of his physical and mental fortitude as he outfoxed his opponents — world number five Chou Tien Chen, All England champion Li Shi Feng and Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in three games to reach his second final in BWF Super 500 event.
Weng Hong Yang began the contest with a 3-1 lead. Prannoy with a good down the line smash managed to level 3-3. Yang managed to get a slender lead with a luck point as a drop shot from him clipped the net and fell on Prannoy’s side. It took his scores to 7-5. Prannoy yet again levelled the scores and at 10-10, Yang made a net-error that allowed Prannoy to enter the interval with a 11-10 lead.
The neck-to-neck battle continues and trailing 12-15, Yang with flurry of points got back his lead. Prannoy soon respeonded back and yet again took the lead. he soon got to the match points with 20-18 after a wide shot from the Chinese. Net-error from Yang helped Prannoy win the first game 21-19.
Weng Hong Yang came back strongly in the second game. He started aggressively and took 4-0 lead. Prannoy soon pulled back by levelling the scores. An incredible drop shot from Weng helped him make it 7-5. He entered the interval with a 11-9 lead for Weng.
Weng went on to dominate as he took his lead to 17-10 and there was no chance for Prannoy to close out the game as Weng took the contest into the decider by clinching the second game 21-13.
Weng continued the momentum and went up 6-4 early in the decider. Prannoy then started to showcase his attacking intent. He reduced the deficit and with a straight smash down the line went up 9-8. He entered the interval with a solitary point lead.
Prannoy continued to attack and this stratergy worked against the Chinee as it kept Weng at bay. However trailing 15-17, Weng found a way to make a comeback. Prannoy went for a smash and it just went wide that allowed Weng to trail 17-18. The Chinese then made a well-judges leave at the sideline to level the scores.
Prannoy hit two successive smashes that helped him get to the matchpoint. Net-error followed from Weng as Prannoy got his hands on his first tour-level title.
