India’s 1000th ODI: Two World Cups and many more memories – Top 10 wins of India in ODI cricket

They have won 518 of their 999 ODI matches so far, maintaining a win percentage of 54.54. While each of those 518 wins have been remarkable in their very own way, in this list, we have assembled India’s best ten victories in ODI cricket:

  1. Texaco Trophy, Second ODI vs England (1990)

India might have won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1983, but they were never really a good touring side till the nineties, especially in the SENA countries. However, that changed in the 1990 Texaco Trophy, when India won the two-match ODI series 2-0. The second win was most special, as England scored 281 runs in their allotted 55 overs. Those were the days when ODI cricket used to be of 55 overs and anything over 250 was considered too humongous to chase down. But led by Mohammad Azharuddin, the Indians proved their worth at Nottinghamshire by chasing the total down with two overs to spare, thanks to Azharuddin’s 63 and Sanjay Manjrekar’s 59.

  1. CB Series, Second Final vs Australia (2008)

In 2008, India toured Australia to compete in the famous CB series against Australia and Sri Lanka. The men in blue reached the finals, won the first final against the Aussies and then won the second final as well. At Brisbane, India batted first and could only score 258 runs, with Sachin Tendulkar being the only good performer with the bat. The Kangaroos were favourites to win, but Praveen Kumar’s four-fer helped them restrict the hosts to only 249.

While the final win against Sri Lanka was India’s best triumph in the 2011 World Cup, they also played brilliantly in the quarter-final. Batting first, Australia put up a decent total of 260 runs on the board, thanks to skipper Ricky Ponting’s century. In reply, India lost Virender Sehwag early but Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir steadied the ship. Later on, Yuvraj Singh’s scintillating unbeaten 57 helped them secure the win.

Similarly, India’s most notable victory in the 1983 World Cup was the final triumph against West Indies, but before that, they registered an improbable win against Zimbabwe. Batting first, India were struggling at 17/5 and looked certain to be all out for under 50. However, a remarkable knock of 175 runs by Kapil Dev helped them set up a total of 266. In the second innings, Madan Lal’s three-wicket haul helped them register a 31-run win.

  1. Coca-Cola Cup, Final vs Australia (1998)

It seems that the men in blue tend to up the ante when they are facing the Aussies, as this famous victory came against the Kangaroos as well. In the final of the 1998 Coca-Cola Cup, Australia scored 272 runs while batting first, with Steve Waugh and Darren Lehmann scoring 70 runs each. Sachin Tendulkar played a sublime knock in the run chase, scoring 134 runs from 131 deliveries, as India chased the total down in 48.3 overs.

In the final of the 2002 NatWest series, England batted first and scored 325 runs, courtesy of centuries from Marcus Trescothick and Nasser Hussain. Sourav Ganguly’s team were once 146/5, but Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif’s match-winning partnership helped seal the victory.

This game was officially an ODI game, but owing to rain, it was reduced to a 20-over affair. India batted first at Edgbaston and scored 129 runs, thanks to Virat Kohli’s 43. England were once cruising towards the victory line, but Ishant Sharma’s Ravichandran Ashwin’s fantastic death bowling helped them register a five-run win.

While the 2011 World Cup triumph was special, it will be fair to say that nothing will be able to be as big a spectacle like the 1983 Prudential World Cup final, when India won the World Cup for the first time in their history. India batted first at Lord’s against West Indies and scored 183 runs, with Andy Roberts running through the batting line-up of Kapil Dev’s team. However, exemplary spells from Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal helped them restrict the Windies to only 140.
