In his press conference, Rohit Sharma hinted at two questionable decisions heading into the IND vs SL 1st ODI in Guwahati. The 35-year-old said that while Suryakumar Yadav has been in terrific form, he would have to give a run to players who have performed in ODIs. India have a huge middle-order dilemma, with Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav fighting for a sole spot.
While Suryakumar has set the world alight with his T20 antics, his ODI records leave a lot to be desired. In the meantime, Shreyas has emerged as a dependable bat in the middle. Suryakumar Yadav has only managed 123 runs in the last ten matches. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has amassed 473 runs in the last ten outings, including a century and three half-centuries.
“The problem happens when you start comparing different formats. We will try and capture what has happened in the last 8-9 months. Those guys who have performed in ODIs will get a run, as simple as that,” said Rohit in his presser.
While one can stand behind his judgement, it is shocking that India does not accommodate Surya in the starting XI. The 32-year-old once again gave a glimpse of his talent, scoring a 45-ball century in Rajkot on Saturday.

As far Ishan Kishan is concerned, he also finds his way to the bench despite grabbing his opportunity. Batting at the top in Rohit’s absence, Gill smashed the fastest ODI double-century in his last game. Rohit however said that the left-hander will have to bide his time for more chances to come.
“Both have done really well. But it is fair that we give Gill a chance to have a fair run. In recent games, Gill has got a lot of runs. So has Ishan. He got a double hundred. I know what it takes to get a double ton. It is a great achievement. But just to be honest and fair to the guys who have done really well before that,” Rohit said.
He added, “It is unfortunate that we won’t be able to play Ishan, but it is fair to give Gill that run looking at how things have panned out in the last 8-9 months. He has done extremely well in that position. Ishan is very unfortunate, but it doesn’t rule out anything. We are going to try and keep everyone in the mix as we play a lot of games ahead.”
Ishan has played 10 ODIs, scoring one century and three fifties with an impressive strike rate of 111.97. Shubman has played 15 ODIs so far and has managed one ton and four fifties and scores at a healthy strike rate of 99.13.
