After India lost five wickets in the space of just 10 overs, Shardul Thakur once again came up with a notable performance with the bat in what was ultimately a lost cause for the visitors. Shardul played himself in stitching a partnership with Jasprit Bumrah to help India to some respectability.
The 30-year-old was sedate and took the game deep before launching a few trademark lusty blows MS Dhoni style to score a maiden half-century off the final ball of the innings. Shardul Thakur’s fifty meant that the pacer now has international half-centuries in Australia, England and now South Africa.
Thakur’s fifty will give India some solace with Kl Rahul and Co clearly missing a genuine all-rounder with Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Hardik Pandya all unavailable. Shardul’s credentials with the bat give India some much-needed batting depth especially with the Men in Blue going a batsman short in their playing XI this series.
