With Ishan Kishan set to open the batting, Rahul Dravid and Hardik Pandya face the difficult choice of selecting his opening partner. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson have all opened in the past for India. However, it is Shubman Gill is who is set to get the nod.
Gill had a fantastic 2022, scoring a plethora of runs in ODI cricket. In the IPL, he was one of the top scorers, amassing 487 runs in Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign. With GT captain Hardik now leading the Indian side, Shubman is expected to make his debut.
What has gone in Gil’s favour is also Gaikwad’s poor returns in Indian colours. While Ruturaj continues to score runs for fun in the domestic circuit and the IPL, his T20I numbers leave a lot to be desired. In 9 matches, the CSK superstar has just 135 runs at a lowly average of 16 and a strike rate of 123.
