Dubai Women’s Invitational T20: In a latest development, the Board Of Cricket Control in India has denied permission to five of its top women’s cricketers to play in the global women’s T20 Invitational tournament. The apex board has cited grounds that it is clashing with the last leg of the Board’s domestic Women’s T20 tournament, TOI has reported. The tournament, organized by Cricket Hong Kong and Fairbreak Global, an Australia-based global gender equality initiative,is slated to be held from May 1-15 in Dubai. “The BCCI has denied to issue No-Objection certificates to the five Indian players who had signed up a contract last year to participate in this event-Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma and Jemima Rodrigues. This event will start from May 1, while the BCCI’s domestic women’s inter-state championship will start in Nagpur from April 18. The knockouts will start from May 1. The BCCI feels that it’s important for all India women’s cricketers to play in the domestic T20 tournament as it’s the basis for the qualification for the 2023 T20 World Cup in February in South Africa. The Board also wants its players to be available for the Women’s T20 Challenge, which will start from around May 24,” a reliable source told this paper.

“The BCCI also denied to give an NOC to GS Lakshmi, who was the match referee during the Women’s World Cup final between England and Australia in New Zealand on April 3, for the Dubai event as Lakshmi is supposed to be the match referee in the domestic Women’s T20 championship,” he revealed.

A source close to organisers said, “The organisers are a bit disappointed that the BCCI has unfortunately denied permission to India’s women’ cricketers to play in this event, which has been sanctioned by the ICC, with the matches being given international status. India is the only country which will go unrepresented at this event now. If you look at the dates closely, there’s no clear clash between these tournaments. Some of the five Indian cricketers would have been free by the knockouts, while a few others could have joined later.”

“The Women’s T20 Challengers are scheduled to be held at least a week after this tournament. The Dubai event will see the participation of 90 women cricketers from 36 countries, divided into six teams of 15 players each. 40 of those cricketers are from Test playing nations, and 50 from associate nations, that is, the non-Test playing nations. It’s a wonderful opportunity for women cricketers from the associate teams to learn from their role models. Sadly, those cricketers have been denied a chance to live their dream and learn a thing or two from India’s women’s cricketers,” he said
