MI vs RCB, IPL 2026: Patidar makes the difference as Bengaluru beat Mumbai despite Rutherford show

This was Mumbai Indians' third consecutive loss and they remain 8th with that. RCB also remain third with six points and a positive NRR of 1.148.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru win by 18 runs over Mumbai Indians to return to winning ways after their loss to Rajasthan Royals. This is Bengaluru's second consecutive win at the Wankhede over Mumbai. 

Sherfane Rutherford tried his best with an unbeaten 71 off 31, but it came way too late as Mumbai managed 222/5. Suyash Sharma's twin strike in the 8th over and Rohit Sharma retiring hurt made the difference in the chase. But it was Rajat Patidar show that decided the tie in RCB's favour. is 20-ball 53, Tim David's 16-ball 34 and Phil Salt's 36-ball 78 helped RCB post a mammoth 240/4.

Sherfane Rutherford hits 26-ball half-century with a six against Romario Shepherd. It has come way too late for Mumbai as they needed a solid show in the middle overs in a 241-run chase.

Sherfane Rutherford has made a late surge as he has hit Jacob Duffy for three sixes in the 18th over. But that is not enough for Mumbai. They need at least 4 of those every over. Mumbai need 54 runs in the last two.

It is mission impossible at the moment for Mumbai Indians. They need 75 runs off 18 balls with Sherfane Rutherford and Mitchell Santner on the crease. Rohit Sharma can also come back if he is able.

On the only delivery Romario Shepherd had to bowl, he dismissed Sherfane Rutherford. Shepherd ran to take the catch as Rutherford top-edged. But as he was busy celebrating, the hooter went on. It was a no-ball as he over-stepped. He dismissed Rutherford once again on the next delivery but since it was a free hit, he was not out, again. 

And after two more deliveries, Rasikh Dar is down for a third time in this over. The umpires had enough and Rajat Patidar called up Romario Shepherd to bowl the remaining delivery.

All the breaks had put a break on Mumbai's momentum. On the third ball, Naman tried to go for a big shot but had no timing and gave away an easy catch to Rajat Patidar at extra cover. Mumbai 5 down now.

The umpires are closely monitoring as Rasikh Salam Dar is down again. He had cramps before he began the over and took over 5 minutes to start that over. And after bowling one delivery, he is down again.

15 overs gone and Mumbai Indians need 94 runs off the last 30 balls. Hardik Pandya's dismissal at this time would be crucial. Now, Naman Dhir and Sherfane Rutherford need to play a knock like Rajat Patidar to catch up with the required run rate of 18.8. They need another 94 runs in the last five overs.

Mumbai Indians lose their captain Hardik Pandya for 40 off 22 He was looking good and was crucial for Mumbai's chase. But he was in a hurry and as he tried to take Jacob Duffy on, lost his balance and miscued the shot. Mumbai lose their 4th wicket for 145.

And as the partnership was looking threatening, Krunal Pandya has removed Suryakumar Yadav for 33 off 22. SKY went for the sweep and did not get enough elevation on that slower delivery. Rasikh Dar on the boundary line took an easy catch. Mumbai 121/3.

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav have kept the pressure on RCB bowlers. They have added a 50-run stand and that is threatening for RCB. But Mumbai still need over 15 runs an over.

Halfway through and Mumbai Indians are 99/2 after 10 overs. RCB were 115/0. So, Mumbai are not far behind but someone needs to play the knock Rajat Patidar did for RCB. MI need another 142 runs in the last 10 overs.

After a twin strike in the first over, Suyash Sharma is under pressure. Suryakumar Yadav has gone after him with two consecutive boundaries to begin his second.

Suryakumar Yadav misses Krunal Pandya's delivery on a sweep/scoop. But RCB's appeal is turned down. Rajat Patidar takes the review and the replays show that the ball was missing the leg stump by some margin. A review is wasted.

Suyash Sharma has struck twice in his first over as Tilak Varma departs. He tried to sweep but got a top-edge for an easy catch. Tilak falls for 1. MI 74/2.

Rohit Sharma is struggling with a hamstring injury. The physio had come on to give him some relief. But he has decided to retire hurt. He was 19 off 13. Suryakumar Yadav comes in. 

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton bring up their 50-run stand in 4.3 overs. Mumbai needed a solid start and they have provided that in a mammoth chase.

Rohit Sharma joins the party as he comes down the track to take on Jacob Duffy for an 80m six. And as he hits the six, the Wankhede crowd erupts. And with that, Rohit also completes 6000 runs for Mumbai Indians. Duffy goes for 18 runs in the over.

It's been Ryan Rickleton all the way with Rohit Sharma facing just three deliveries. Rickleton has taken on Jacob Duffy with two sixes so far.

Ryan Rickleton is off the mark with a six against Jacob Duffy. He took Duffy on a good-length ball over the deep mid-wicket for a six. And then, closed the over with a boundary through the covers.

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton begin 241-run chase at the Wankhede. If they pull it off, it will be Mumbai Indians' highest successful run-chase ever. And to do that, they need a record chase at the Wankhde.

Finally a long innings comes to an end. Trent Boult picks up his first wicket for MI this year. It is an excellent over to end with. David hits a six in the end. 34 from 16 is what he manages.

Pandya comes for another over and there looks like is an injury concern. The ball has been changed as well, after it gets wet. Another expesnive one ends.

Bumrah comes now for another over and he is hitting a few yorkers. It is just so difficult to hit him for boundaries. 7 runs from the over only.

Kohli gets to his 65th fifty here and it has come in 37 deliveries. He needs to tee off now and look at 260-270 at least. and right after the milestone, Kohli is caught out by Suryakumar Yadav. Right after that, Patidar scores a 17-ball 50.

After having bowled a decent first over, Shardul has been taken to the cleaners. He bowls a good chunk of wides, and then is blasted for a few runs by Patidar.

Wicket doesn't do any good to RCB as Patidar comes and smashes 22 runs in 4 deliveries. 250 on the cards for sure.

Shardul has broken the partnership here, and Salt is caught by Hardik Pandya. He is out for 78 from 36.

Hardik comes on for another over and this is not looking good for MI. There is a close shout for a run out, but Salt is fine there.

Santner continues, and one wonders why no Shardul has come until now. 100 runs are on the board in under 10 overs. Trouble for MI..

Mayank Markande comes into the attack and has been hot for a couple of boundaries upfront. Salt hits a quickfire 50. Three fours and a six come in the over.

When in trouble, call Bumrah. And he has answered Mumbai's SOS call. He just comes up with 6-run over, against the run of play.

What an expensive over this is turning out to be. Santner comes for a fresh over, and he has been cleaned for three sixes, and a four in the over.

And the much-anticipated clash is on now. Bumrah bowls to Virat, and just the second ball has gone for a four. A top edge and Virat survives. 10 runs come from the over.

Boult has been out of sorts this year, and that continues to show. First, Virat hits him for a four, and then Salt ends the over with a six. Good start for RCB.

Not having Bumrah have the new ball is a bit strange, but Hardik comes up with a 9-run over. They need wickets fairly early in the innings.

It is not Bumrah who starts, but Boult. And Virat and Salt start really well here. 13 runs come from the first over and RCB are away.

With both teams warming up, the two captains, Hardik Pandya and Rajat Patidar, are walking towards the middle for the toss. Win the toss and opt to bowl?

As Virat Kohli has been successful against MI, Rohit Sharma has also found success against RCB. He has 848 runs in 33 innings against RCB, including 7 half-centuries. At the Wankhede Stadium, his home ground, Rohit has 2747 runs, including a century and 19 fifties. However, it has been 2916 days since Rohit last scored a fifty against RCB.

RCB, despite the recent setback, boast a strong form overall. Their potent batting line-up, led by Virat Kohli, who has an excellent record at the Wankhede, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Tim David, and Jitesh Sharma, will be aiming to plunder Mumbai’s bowling attack.

Now, Mumbai need to regroup, especially their bowling with Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur all guilty of leaking runs. They will bank on the home conditions to take down Bengaluru’s strong batting line-up. 

Mumbai also need their star batters to respond after their top order fell apart in a rain-curtailed game. Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya (captain) need to provide Mumbai with some solid knocks. 

The Wankhede pitch is classically batting-friendly, offering good bounce, pace, and true carry that allows batters to play through the line and time shots freely. Short boundaries amplify scoring, with high totals common. In the last game at this venue, Mumbai Indians chased down a 221-run target against Kolkata Knight Riders. 

Pacers may get some swing or seam early with the new ball, aided by sea breeze, but the surface eases out quickly. Spinners get limited assistance, though dew in night games often assists the chasing side by slowing the ball less and aiding stroke-play. Teams winning the toss often prefer to chase. 

Mumbai hold a historical edge in IPL encounters over Bengaluru, winning 19 out of 34 matches. But RCB have stayed competitive, winning 15 games against MI. At the Wankhede, though, it’s an advantage for Mumbai. The home team has won 8 out of 12 games.
