GT vs MI, IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians win by 99 runs

Mumbai Indians have clinched a mammoth 99-run win against Gujarat Titans as the latter are bowled out for just 100 runs. Allah Ghazanfar gets the final wicket! Siraj takes a review but it is of no use. MI get their second win of the season and it comes after 4 back-to-back losses

Why was Ashwani Kumar not played earlier. Now he gets his fourth, as Shahrukh Khan makes his way back. Only formalities remain now.

Ashwani Kumar has his third wicket. Rashid Khan tries to make room and go over point. But is caught by Raj Bawa. This is the match that could change the way MI perform in the tournament. All teams will have to beware.

This chase is going nowhere. Maybe the idea is to take the game deep - and not let the NRR drop too much. GT would like to add another 100 runs in the next 9 overs. Slow ball and Tewatia edges; he is a goner.

Shahrukh Khan and Tewatia have long been criticised for not doing enough for the team. But can they change things around, and take GT to a win?

Mitchell Santner comes into the attack and removes Washi Sundar straight up. Sundar pulls it but Naman Dhir takes a brilliant catch on the boundary. And he is not done yet. And he gets his countryman Philiips here. Caught and bowled. GT 5 down.

Ghazanfar comes into the attack now and he comes up a good over again, where only eight runs are conceded. This is getting too steep for GT.

Ashwani Kumar gets his first match this year, and he gets the wicket of Shubman Gill. He is caught out by Naman Dhir in the deep for 14. Mind you, Ashwani had 11 wickets in 7 matches last year, so probably he should have played earlier.

Krish Bhagat into the attack now. What a moment for the debutant. Gill gets yet another boundary. A very, very clean over from him.

What works in GT's favour is, they are usually the team who don't go over the top a lot. So MI will have work extra hard to get the win. Boundaries and singles/doubles is what they rely on.

The wicket is doing some tricks for now. The ball pitches on middle and hits on Buttler's pad, in what was going down leg. But he is adjudged lbw. But four boundaries still come in the over.

19 overs without a wicket, and here Bumrah picks his first wicket of IPL 2026. The ball moves away from Sai Su, and it goes straight into the hands of Krish. Just one run from the over.

Tilak Varma scored 19 on the first 22 balls. And in the next 23 balls, he has scored 82 runs at a whopping strike rate of 356.5 to complete his maiden IPL century off just 45 balls to equal Sanath Jayasuriya's record of fastest century for Mumbai Indians. Tilak smashes Prasidh Krishna for 22 runs as he remains unbeaten on 101. Mumbai Indians score 73/1 in the last four overs. Mumbai now have a winning total of 199/5.

76 runs had come in the last 30 deliveries as Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma were on the charge. There had to be a wicket as Hardik was looking to unleash. But as he does, he departs. Hardik tried to flick Mohd Siraj on a low full-toss after hitting him for a four on the 1st ball. But Glenn Phillips was the man to protect the boundaries and he ran across a few yards to take the catch. The 81-run stand off 38 balls is broken.

Tilak Varma might have just shifted the momentum of the match towards Mumbai. MI needed a big over and he delivered in the 18th, smashing Ashok Sharma for 26 runs. But Ashok got his revenge, hitting back at Tilak Varma's man-box with a 150kph delivery.

After scores of 20, 0, 14, 1 & 8, Tilak Varma returns to form when Mumbai Indians needed him the most. He notches up his first fifty of IPL 2026 and 9th of IPL to rescue Mumbai from 44/3 in the powerplay. He gets to the landmark with a six against Ashok Sharma.

Kagiso Rabada ends his spell with 3/33, conceding just 4 runs in the 16th over. He rattled Mumbai with three wickets in the powerplay with big scalps of Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav.

Tilak Varma unleashes, at last. After the time-out, he takes on Prasidh Krishna with 6, 4 and a 4 to score 19 runs from the over. It was an over that MI needed to resurrect their batting. With five overs to go, MI are 122/4.

Hardik Pandya joins Tilak Varma in the middle and brings up 2000 runs for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He is crucial for MI's batting today.

The partnership is broken and it's Prasidh Krishna who delivers the blow. Prasidh bowled a short ball and Naman Dhir tried to pull, he mistimed and gave away a catch to Kagiso Rabada at the square leg. Mumbai lose their 4th wicket for 96 as Naman departs for 45 off 32.

Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma bring up a 50-run stand, a crucial partnership for Mumbai Indians after the poor powerplay, where they lost three wickets. Now, the two need to accelerate.

Naman Dhir has had enough as he takes the attack to Washington Sundar with two boundaries to move to 40s. Mumbai end up getting 13 runs from that over.

Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma are shouldering on at 7 runs per over. Mumbai are on the backfoot and Rashid Khan's tight overs have made it more difficult. Mumbai score 75/3 after 10 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav just hit Kagiso Rabada for a six and a four to increase the scoring rate. But Rabada hit back with a 152.1kph ripper to clean up Suryakumar. Mumbai are in trouble as they end the powerplay with 46/3.

Mumbai Indians are two down in the powerplay as Quinton de Kock departs for 13. He just hit his Proteas teammate for a 4. But Rabada bowled a 149.7kph short delivery, giving De Kock no chance to react. As he tried to swing, got a top edge for an easy caught-and-bowled.

Danish Malewar lasts just 4 deliveries on his white-ball and IPL debut. He tried to flick Kagiso Rabada and missed the line completely and it was an easy LBW decision.

For some unknown reasons, Ryan Rickleton has been dropped. Danish Malewar will open with Quinton de Kock, who smashed a ton in the last match. Ryan Rickleton is their top scorer alongside Rohit Sharma. Now, both of them are out for different reasons. Malewar had an excellent campaign for Vidarbha when they won the Ranji Trophy. But he is yet to make his white-ball debut for his state. This will be his first competitive white-ball game at this level.

We are just 10 minutes away from toss, and the team winning it should be looking to bowl first. It isn't really a 200-run pitch.

MI should look to go for a few changes. Except for the first match of the season, despite having some of the best names in their team, they have struggled. Time to get in fresh blood.

Five matches, 122 deliveries, 0 wickets: Jasprit Bumrah has been on a lean patch. And that is a concern for Mumbai Indians. Even though Bumrah has bowled tidy overs at an economy rate of just 8.63, the lack of wickets has not helped Mumbai bounce back in matches. Will it be the day when he ends the drought? In IPL, Bumrah hasn't had success. Apart from a 3/14 in 2024, he went wicketless in two other ocassions. 

Rohit Sharma has undergone a fitness test today in Ahmedabad and we will know shortly whether he has cleared it. But it looks unlikely that he will be fit to play after a week following a hamstring strain. Even Hardik Pandya confirmed that he would miss up to two matches. 

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have a contrasting story. They sit at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with four straight defeats and a bruising net run rate of -1.076. Injuries have not helped. Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Santner both missed the Punjab Kings fixture on Thursday. 

Jasprit Bumrah is searching for rhythm, with an unusual wicketless streak of 122 balls this season. Add out-of-form Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai’s batting has gone for a toss. Mumbai need a victory to turn things around in IPL 2026.

Gujarat Titans have built their IPL 2026 campaign on something Mumbai Indians can currently only dream of: stability. GT have used just 13 players across their five games so far, and the 13th only came in because an injury ruled Shubman Gill out of one game. That kind of continuity has translated straight into performance. 

The bowling unit looks balanced across phases, with Prasidh Krishna back among the wickets, Rashid Khan running the middle overs, and Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada coming off a superb new-ball spell against KKR. The surface is expected to be a high-scoring belter, in line with the 195-run first-innings average at the venue this IPL 2026.
