England, Australia boost for broadcasters, BCCI expect 10K Cr+ from media rights

BCCI will sell TV & Digital Rights separately with an e-auction set for September 1st week.

Another auction in cricket is here, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to make headlines again. Despite reservations, BCCI is well placed to have another windfall. The new BCCI Media Rights deal will likely cross Rs 10,000 Crore with India Cricket Team playing a combined 39 matches against the top two teams in the world — Australia (21) and England (18). In the next five years, India will play 88 games and as India play against the Big 2, broadcasters are happy to capitalise on the popularity and intense competition.

BCCI has set August 25 as the deadline to buy tender documents. And the entire process is set to be complete by September 1st week.

For the first time, India Cricket bilateral rights will be sold separately for TV and Digital after the success of IPL. That creates demands for both platforms. While BCCI Media Rights won’t fetch values close to IPL, BCCI is confident of crossing Rs 10,000 Crore mark even though there will be less number of matches.

“We expect upward of 10,000 Cr. It’s not just about inflation but about the quality of matches during this period. We have Australia and England both touring India and apart from that, there will be huge competition for digital as well. There has been a shift from TV to digital and with so many players in the market, it will attract more attention. So, combined, expecting 10,000 Cr is based on the market situation,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

Despite interest from a lot of companies, the serious contenders will remain Disney-Star, Viacom18 and Sony. Disney has lost IPL digital rights. Viacom18 does not have IPL TV rights while Sony has even failed to land Australia cricket rights. Hence, there could be a split winner as well as was the case for IPL. Hence, all parties are eying BCCI Media Rights.

“It is too early to comment but there will be only three serious bidders if the Zee-Sony conglomerate joins the bidding war. There are many things one needs to factor in. Two entities — Reliance and Star — had gone all out for IPL rights. Star also owns the ICC tournament property. So how much each will stretch is a question,” a senior executive from one of the broadcasters told PTI.
