After losing the opening game 13-21, he made a fighting comeback in the 2nd game, winning the game by 25-23. He took the third game 21-11 to confirm his place in the last eight. Kidambi Srikanth was dominated by Popov in the first set. Srikanth struggled to pick up the left hander’s terrific cross court smashes and couldn’t do much as he surrendered in the first set. He however got back into the groove in the second set and displayed a strong fight. He began building pressure on his opponent. Popov’s inexperiene came to his dismay as he kept losing crucial points. Popov however didn’t concede much lead and was in the game as he levelled the scores 10-10 and entered the break trailing 11-10.
From then on the began swinging like a pendulum as both the players began catching up with each other. The neck-to-neck battle was underway until the score were 23-23. Popov gave a big scare to Srikanth but the Indian was calm under pressure and got the valuable two points to stretch the game into the third set.
Srikanth started dominating the third set right from the start and showcased all his experience. Popov who fought hard in the first two sets couldn’t even come close to the Indian as Srikanth won the set comfortably 21-11 to enter the quarter-final.
Kidambi Srikanth will now face Anders Antonsen in the quarterfinals. Antonsen beat Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammasin 17-21, 21-14, 21-14.
