Hylo Open Badminton Semifinals: India’s challenge at the Hylo Open has come to an end on Saturday. In the Men’s Singles Kidambi Srikanth suffered a 18-21, 15-21 defeat against Anthony Ginting. Earlier, Indian Women’s Doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand & Tressa Jolly bowed out from the semifinals after losing to Thailand’s Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard 21-17, 14-21, 18-21. Kidambi started the first game on a positive note as he led 6-3 at the start. However Ginting managed to make a comeback to level the scores 7-7. Srikanth was up for the challenge as he did not allow the Indonesian to take the lead and entered the interval with the score at 11-9 after clinching a point by playinga good drop shot.
However after the interval Ginting came back to level the scores 14-14 and went on to take the lead in the contest. Ginting started playing some attacking shots and began to dominate against the Indian as Srikanth was unable to counter the challenge. Despite trying hard, the Indian lost the first game 18-21.
In the second game, Ginting continued his good show as right from the start he began his attack and entered the interval with a 11-6 lead. From then on, it was Ginting’s show as Srikanth came no way near the Indonesian. Ginting had nine match points on his hand and it was only at this moment, Srikanth tried to make a comeback as he saved four points but it was too late as an error from the Indian saw Ginting clinch victory in straight games.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Semifinals:
Women’s doubles duo Gayatri-Treesa lost to Benyapa Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard despite taking the first-game lead. Benyapa-Nuntakarn won the match 17-21, 21-14, 21-18 in one hour and two minutes.
With five consecutive points, Gayatri-Treesa won the first game 21-17. In the second game, the world no. 19 Thai pair found their rhythm back and displayed their attacking prowess to challenge the Indians and found success. They went on to lead to 16-12, and took the contest into the third game by taking the second set 21-14.
The third game was closely fought. Gayatri-Treesa entered the interval with a 11-7 lead. However, post-interval, the Thai pair squeezed the gap at 13-15 with four consecutive points and ultimately levelled at 18-18 before wrapping up the match, winning the game 21-18.
