When asked about the main target for Chennai Blitz, Akhin, who plays as a middle blocker, said, “Our goal is to play in the World Club World Championship this year.”

The Club World Championships is scheduled to be held in India for the first time this December. None of the Indian Volleyball club side has made it to the event so far. But being the hosts, the winner of this year’s Prime Volleyball League will get an opportunity to directly qualify for the tournament.

Despite having set its sights on the big event, Akhin says the team is not thinking too much about it at the moment. “We are excited about such an opportunity. It is a dream for every Volleyball player to play in the Club World Championship. Now it is at a touching distance. But we first have win the upcoming season in order to make the dream into a reality,”  he said.

After a disappointing finish last year, the team has roped in Argentina’s Ruben Wolochin as the head coach. Under the foreign coach, the team has been training for over a month. “We have been preparing for nearly a month now. Under the new coach, we have been learning new techniques. We are confident of a good show.” stated Akhin.

He was asked to elaborate more on the training regime under the new coach. “He has made changes to the way we train by teaching the European techniques. Initially it was obviously difficult for us to adapt. But over the course of last month, we have got into the groove. We are eager to showcase it on the court.”

Chennai Blitz will not be playing in front of their home crowd this year. Only three cities – Bengaluru, Kochi and Hyderabad will be hosting the matches in PVL 2023. Akhin however expects a good support from the fans in Tamil Nadu, “The team has a good fan following. We expect a good support from the fans from wherever we play. This year we want to keep them happy by performing really well in the league.”

Chennai Blitz will begin their campaign in the second edition of the league on 7th February 2023. They will be facing Kochi Blue Spikers in their first match of the season.
