Eldhose Paul lands triple jump gold in Germany, but still way behind Paris 2024 qualification mark

Even though Eldhose Paul secured the gold in the Tag Der Überflieger 2024 event and it was his season-best performance, it was nowhere close to the qualification marked required to book a berth in Paris Olympics 2024.

Eldhose Paul of India triumphed in the men’s triple jump competition on Thursday at the Tag Der Überflieger 2024 athletics competition held in Essen, Germany. In the German meet, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger level event, the 27-year-old Paul—the current Commonwealth Games champion—managed a season-best effort of 16.55m. Kaukolahti Tuomas (16.34m) of Finland and Sweden’s Hellström Jesper (15.81m) finished second and third, respectively.

Best performance not good enough for Paris Berth

Even though Eldhose Paul secured the gold in the Tag Der Überflieger 2024 event and it was his season-best performance, it was nowhere close to the qualification marked required to book a berth in Paris Olympics 2024. In the triple jump category, the qualification standards have been kept at 17.22 meters. Eldhose is almost a meter short of the qualification criteria.

Moreover, the last time in Tokyo Olympics 2020, the gold was secured by Pedro Pichardo of Portugal with a jump of 17.98 m while Fabrice Zango Hugues of Burkinabé secured the bronze with a jump of 17.47 m, almost a meter more than Eldhose’s best effort. So it is safe to say that Eldhose will not catch a Paris-bound flight if he does not improve his performance drastically in the next few months.
