- Former World No.1 Azarenka hasn’t tasted much success on the WTA Tour this year.
- She started this year at the Adelaide International and reached the quarterfinals, before bowing out after facing three set defeat against Iga Swiatek.
- This is her best performance until this year. After Adelaide, she faced fourth round defeat at the Australian Open, before bowing out in the first round at Dubai Tennis Championships.
- She then participated in the Qtar Open, Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open and in all the three tournaments, she faced first round defeats.
- She is playing her first tournament on clay at Madrid and defeated Viktorija Golubic in the first round in straight sets.
- She then clinched a come-from behind victory over Tamara Zidansek in the second round, after losing the first set.

- Meanwhile, the unseeded Amanda Anisimova defeated third seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round at Madrid.
- She then had to fight back after losing the first set against Petra Martic in the second round and cinched a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory to enter the third round.
- This is her second clay court tournament this year and she looks in fine form as she went till the semifinals at Charleston Open, before entering Madrid.
- It was her best-ever performance so far this year. She looks to put up similar show at Madrid Open.
