Karim Benzema scored an 83rd-minute winner as Real Madrid overcome a stubborn Rayo Vallecano side to move nine points clear at the top of LaLiga. Luca Zidane, son of former Real manager Zinedine, made two great saves to deny Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema in the first ten minutes as it began to feel as if Real were in for a frustrating evening at Vallecas.
The hosts had chances to score for themselves in an open first half as Bebé stormed into the box from Sergi Guardiola’s flick-on and smashed the side-netting. Asensio has produced two stunning left-footed curlers to win games for Madrid in recent weeks and he nearly did it again in the 24th minute but this time the shot floated just wide.
Zidane was on hand to keep out Real again before Luka Modrić came close to breaking the deadlock in the 75th-minute after being played in by Benzema with his effort from 12 yards out hitting the outside of the post.
But when there’s a will, Benzema finds a way and the Frenchman played a sublime one-two with Vinícius Junior inside the Rayo box before rolling the ball into the empty net to secure a precious three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Real now move clear at the top with second-placed Sevilla in action in the Seville derby against Real Betis on Sunday.
