Pranati becomes third Indian to win a medal at Gymnastics World Cup, clinches bronze in vault

The FIG Apparatus World Cup in Cairo is the first leg of the four event series, which will also serve as Paris 2024 qualifier.

Indian gymnast Pranati Nayak scripted history of sorts when she won the bronze medal in the women’s vault event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup 2024 in Cairo, on Saturday. Rio Olympics finalist in the same event, Dipa Karmakar, who is on a comeback trail from prolonged injury, finished fifth.

As per a report in Olympics.com, Nayak qualified seventh for the finals, with an aggregate score of 13.166. Later, she went on to improve her performances, and scored 13.620, to get the medal. Meanwhile, North Korea’s An Chang-Ok took home the gold with a score of 14.320.

Bulgaria’s Valentina Georgieva clinched the silver. Importantly, both Nayak and Valentina finished on the same score, but the latter finished second on the basis of technical superiority. Dipa, on the other hand, secured 13.380 points.

Also, this is only the third time any Indian has won a medal at the event. Prior to this, Aruna Reddy won a bronze in vault event in Melbourne 2018. In the same year, Dipa had won a gold at Mersin, and bronze at Cottbus.
